Gold for MSB Athletes at National Inter Counties XC

Liam_TrembleSligo Racecourse was the setting for the Woodies DIY National Inter-counties XC races on Sunday 27th November 2011. The National Even Age Juvenile Cross Country races were run earlier in the day. While the sun shone for the races, the very wet week leading up to the races made for heavy under foot conditions and the steep hill at the end of the lap added to an energy sapping course. The only juveniles to represent MSB were Alanna and Kelly Clarke on the Dublin U12 team. This was their first experience at a National event and Alanna finished in 40th position, coming home with a Dublin Bronze team medal. Well done, Alanna and we look forward to many more National races. In the Senior Ladies race which was won by Sarah Tracey, Kate O'Neill, who has had some very good races this year, came home in 23rd position. But the Senior Men's race was to be the most successful of the day for our MSB athletes, John Coghlan, who was one of the Irish team who won Gold at last year's European U23 Championships, finished  in 15th position - 2nd Dublin counter, with  Liam Tremble, in his first year in the Senior ranks coming home in a very creditable 20th position - 4th Dublin counter .  They both helped Dublin secure the teams Gold medal - Dublin winning the county title with 103 points ahead of Antrim with 109 points and Cork with 182 points.

Congratulations to Liam on his selection to represent Ireland on the European Cross Country Under 23 team, which will be held this year in Slovenia - 11th December.

Another good day for MSB juveniles at Uneven Age Dublin Championships in Marley Park.

MSB Juveniles were out in force on the windswept slopes of the Dublin mountains in Marley Park on Sunday 13th November and 13 of them qualified for the National Cross Country Championships on Sunday 11th December. In the U9 Boys Traiean Rebegea was home 2nd and Christian Clarke was 9th. The U11 Girls brought home Gold medals with Molly Brown 2nd, Aisling Murphy 6th, Rebecca Ward 7th and Aisling Mohan 9th. And not to be outdone the U11 Boys did the same. Sean Brennan was 2nd and Sam Turner 8th, Robert Rebegea and Owen Watt made up the rest of the team that got the gold medals. Well done lads. Nicole O'Gorman was 5th in the U13 Girls and Adam Watt was12th in the U13 Boys. Vanessa O'Connor was 6th in the U15 Girls while the U15 Boys were just beaten for the Gold medals on countback. They had the same points as DSD with Seamus McCartney in 4th, Shane Keenan 7th, Dylan Turner 8th and Darragh Kenny in 23rd ensured they got the team medals. In the U17 Girls Sarah Hawkshaw was 5th and Aoibhinn Dowdall 7th.

While this brings the Clubs Cross Country season to an end for those not going to the Nationals, we have our Christmas races in Porterstown to look forward to on the 18th December and after Christmas the Indoor Leagues will start. So continue to turn up for training and do the hard work with your team mates.

Dave Fitzpatrick Marathon PB in Berlin 2011

We had great representation in the Berlin Marathon 25th Sept. 2011. Dave Fitzpatrick took his racing to a new level, recording a fantastic new PB of 2:36:45 to place 122nd overall. Special mention goes to Paddy Parrott clocking 3:07:28, for 23rd in his category. Most were satisfied with their individual perfomances. A few didn’t get to display their full potential but live to fight another day. Thanks to all who supported and traveled with the team.

Marathon Man wins Glen Cup

On the home front MSB continued the tradition that is the Glen Cup on Thursday night last in the Phoenix Park. In the juvenile ranks competition was of a very high standard with Dylan Turner coming in first ahead of Vanessa O’Connor, with David Troy taking the bronze medal position.

In the Senior 10k competition was equally fierce. Some normal athletes (are there any?) prepare for marathons by running 10ks but Dave Goodall, turned that around preparing for the Glen Cup by running the Longford Marathon just last Sunday in a very respectable time of 3.24.38. That must have done him some good as he came home first in the handicapped event 39.13. Kenny McAndrew seems to have a new impetus since becoming a father coming in 2nd 37.51 and how wonderful to see David Scanlon fit and healthy finishing 3rd in 38.09.

John Coghlan wins Silver in National 1500m

1500m
“Don't Stop Thinking About Tomorrow” (Fleetwood Mac) came on the radio as I drove up the N7 on my way to Santry Stadium. And John Coghlan and Kate O'Neill were looking forward to the next occasions
when they'd be stepping back onto the track after their fine performances in the National Senior Championships.

John Coghlan ran a fine tactical race to pick up the Silver medal in the 1500m. Off a slow first 2 laps John kept himself in a prime position out of trouble and made his bid for victory off the crown of the bend with 150m to go. Following in his footsteps though was Paul Robinson (St Coca’s) who had the leg speed down the final straight to run away a clear victor in 3.50.41. John clocked 3.51.44 to win his first Senior track championship medal and was already looking forward to what he hopes will be a fast Irish Milers Club race in Belfast on Friday next.

A big well done to all who took part in the Dublin T & F Championships particularly those who braved the wet winter type conditions on the Sunday morning in Santry stadium & at the Friday at the relays in Tallaght. While the following were top finishers this year, a lot of our other athletes will definitely be up there next year.
